We will get to see a WINning team for the NINTH year in a row. The WIN program has served over 1400 Sequim High School girls to date. Sign-up sheets for the 2007/2008 program are currently available in the Career Center at Sequim High School. Any female student who is interested in exploring careers of the 21st Century (with special emphasis on non-traditional careers) is encouraged to sign-up.

WIN is a joint partnership of Sequim High School and Soroptimist International of Sequim. The WIN Program was undertaken to increase educational and career opportunities for local young women, which will help to provide long term economic well being.

Students choose areas of the program they wish to be involved in, depending on their level of interest. Some past WIN activities include: ROPES Challenge Course, U.W. Tour, W.S.U. Tour, NW Women In Trades Fair, Career and College Expo, State Capitol Legislative Tour, Resume / Job-Readiness Workshops, Job Shadowing / Mentoring Opportunities and a cast of women guest speakers representing non-traditional careers.

The WIN Program acknowledges and appreciates the amazing involvement and advocacy of our community members. We look forward to a wonderful WIN year!

THE WIN (Women in Networks) PROGRAM Highlighted Functions

Trip to Olympia

Twenty five WIN students participated in what many described as the most exciting, informative WIN field trip to date when we visited the Capitol on March 26, 1999. Mitzi Sanders, Career Co-ordinator for Sequim High School, and Lynn Kessler, a strong advocate of our WIN program who inspired us all at our WIN kick-off last fall, organized an action filled day.

WIN_Trip to Olympia

  • We sat in on a public hearing before a House subcommittee relating to gun control.
  • We observed the House of Representatives in session, sitting in the gallery above the floor.
  • We observed the State Senate in session and noted their more formal way of conducting business.
  • Lynn Kessler provided us a tour of the floor of the House and explained the inner workings of how business gets done there.
  • We met with Senator Jeanne Kohl, a Seattle Democrat who also teaches sociology/women's issues at the University of Washington.
  • We visited the State Supreme Court (not in session) where the girls were given the opportunity to assume roles as the nine justices, bailiff, and opposing sets of attorneys.
WIN Event 2
At the end of the day, several of our WINners expressed that they could envision themselves as future legislators or lobbyists, something they had never considered before this experience!
R.O.P.E.S. CHALLENGE COURSE
The R.O.P.E.S.(Reality Orientated Physical Experience Service) challenge course at Peninsula College is a physically challenging course, building self-esteem, teamwork, trust and problem solving skills, with unconditional support among peers.

Resume Writing Seminar

One Thursday in May, Dee Christensen graciously conducted two hour-long hands-on resume writing workshops for approximately 30 WIN students at Sequim High School.

By sharing her own life experience and adventures, and encouraging the participants to do the same, Dee helped these high school girls to realize that they already have many skills and valuable experiences to bring to a potential employer or educational endeavor.

WIN Having Fun

There is no teaching until the pupil is brought into the same state or principle which you are; a transfusion takes place: he is you and you are he; then is a teaching, and by no unfriendly chance or bad company can he ever quite lose the benefit.
